Thank You

Dear 3W Families,
Thank you so much for your generous gift certificate to West Marine. My husband is very excited about it too. As many of you know who own boats, there is always something breaking down so this will really come in handy for that or some other boat item. The special flag that was made was a wonderful surprise too. I plan on going to the boat this weekend and seeing if I can get a picture of it to send to you. What a treasure for me to see all the kids names as well as the dates that I have taught in Stratham all together.  It has been a great year filled with so many touching memories. As the kids know I will always have a soft spot in my heart for them and their amazing families.
Please have a terrific summer with your kids. Time goes by too quickly, so enjoy every minute you can with your families. I hope to see you all sometime again. Thank you again for the gifts and for sharing your children with me all year.
All the Best To You
Fondly,
Cathy

3W News

Did You Know?
  • Sunday will be a solar eclipse called "ring of fire". This is when the sun is eclipsed by the moon. It is called an annular eclipse and the last one was in 1994.
  • Only states west of the Mississippi will be able to view it. It actually begins in Asia on the morning of May 21 when it will be visible in southern Japan and southern China. Please find time to check the web for photos of this with your child. We talked about it during class and it fits into our unit on the solar system.
  • ALSO- Today the first of its kind of commercially owned rocket call Falcon 9 was launched at Cape Canaveral headed for the International Space Station to deliver cargo. Two NASA ships which have been docked in Portsmouth, NH and now are in the North Atlantic will be taking high-definition video and thermal imagery of Falcon 9 and its Dragon capsule climbing through the atmosphere en route to the ISS. These two ships will then return to Portsmouth to transfer this data back to NASA officials. Kind of a cool connection for us!
  • Your child is researching a planet and will soon develop a game to teach other classmates about what they have learned.

Immigration Homework

Please help your child with the following:

1. Create an identity tonight for the simulation and fill out paper together
2. Send back the Ethnic Food paper so we know how many are attending
3. If possible type your child's immigration story and print it at home. Please use a font about size 26. They are bringing home the rough draft tonight and need help with it. Some students still need to finish the ending of the story. They could tell it to you as you type it. I would love these back to school no later than Thursday pretty please. If you can't print at home send it to me and I will try to do it here.

Reminders
. No spelling or math facts this week
. Start gathering the clothes for Friday, we talked more about that today. Be sure to think about the bundle to carry special items in. That will be homework for tomorrow.
. Students will eat a regular lunch on Friday and have PE in the afternoon so they should or could bring a change of clothes in their backpacks on Friday!

Let me know if you have any questions!!! The excitement is growing!

3W Updates

Hi Families,
Your child experienced an exciting activity in math today. They are bringing home a card with their user name and password to play math facts games against other kids all over the world. It is called World Math and can be reached at worldmathsday.com (don't forget the s) They have gone online today in the classroom and used level 1. On March 7 there will be a whole day dedicated to this. There is also a world spelling competition they can access from this same site if they are interested. I hope you have time to encourage them to play. It was fun to hear them yell, "I just beat someone from Canada, or Germany or England."

I also wanted to remind you to start looking for an immigration outfit for your child to wear for our simulation on Friday, March 9th. I have told the kids the immigrants were usually very poor. I have photo albums from previous years to show them some ideas. No one needs to buy anything. Boys usually wore old hats or caps, vests, coats and the girls often wore long skirts, shawls, head scarves etc. Vacation week may be a good time to start to get this started. Let me know if you need help.

Tomorrow is the x 7 test as well as the spelling test.

I hope you all have a wonderful February vacation. If you like to ski it sounds like the mountains may get some snow! Best, Cathy

Artifact Homework

Families,
Your child is bringing home a paper about bringing in an artifact from their family to share with the class. If you do not want the artifact to come in because it is fragile or too valuable you could take a picture of it. Some previous examples brought in are: jewelry, dolls, plates or other dishes, doll blankets, military items, pictures, silverware etc. Hopefully you have one small item to better connect your child with his/her ancestors.

This is due anytime by Friday February 17th. Please be sure to fill out the paper coming home tonight and send it in with your chil when they bring in the artifact.

Thank you

Happy New Year

3W Families,
Thank you for your generous contribution of 175.00 to the NH Food Bank and my gift certificate to The River House in Portsmouth. I took my daughter there during her visit home over the holidays. It's one of my favorite restaurants. I also want to thank our room parents for organizing our Solstice Party as well as all of you who sent in food or party supplies. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and will have a healthy and happy 2012!

Homework begins again today. Your child is bringing home spelling words as well as our first multiplication pattern, x 1 and x 0. We talked about these today and most felt this would be a piece of cake.

We will spend about two weeks finishing up our Native American unit before beginning the Immigration activities. The last two regions are the Plains and the NW Coastal areas. Ask your child which one they are researching with a group of classmates.

Please encourage your child to go on the computer a few times a week for math facts practice. This is homework and a good way to master those facts. Thanks!
